I used the Donama cervical pillow every night for a month and here is what happened.
I have chronic headaches and often wake up in the night with a migraine or a tension headache. I have probably already tried 5 or 6 pillows already this year. But this specific type of pillow was referred to me by an orthopedist, and so I clicked buy it now on Amazon and tried it out for a month.
This pillow comes vacuum sealed and once opened, needs some time to fully inflate or whatever memory foam does. So I left it out overnight and put a pillowcase on it the next day. There is a high side and a lower side to this pillow and I couldn’t tell really which is which so I just picked the side that felt like it hugged my neck the best and that is the side I slept on the next night.
I had been having some neck and shoulder pain from a round of Botox shots I had gotten about a week earlier, so the first morning I woke up and my neck was still hurting and I wasn’t sure if it was from the pillow or the Botox or both. I figured that would happen though. It pretty much happens every time I change pillows. Nights 2 through 5 were roughly the same. Sigh, is this going to be what it is like sleeping on this pillow? I hope not.
Night 6 or 7 is when it started turning a corner. I wasn’t waking up with terrible tension in my neck. I could still feel that spot in my shoulder that had been hurting so badly after the injections, but everything else felt more relaxed. I even felt comfortable. What? Really? Ok, well, I’m sure it is just a fluke. I’ll wake up at some point and not feel like I can’t turn my head sideways. That is just the life I have, right? Wrong. Now don’t get me wrong, I still wake up some days with a migraine (especially if rain is moving in) and some days with a stiff neck. But that doesn’t happen 5 days a week now. It happens maybe 2 days a week.
You guys, I think I may have found a pillow that actually helps with my unbelievably stiff neck! I feel cradled when I am laying on my back. And my neck feels supported when I roll over on my side. There is even a space to put your arm when you are on your side (and I assume if you are a stomach sleeper that those spaces on either side would allow you to put your arms up without having to try to go under the pillow, but I’m not a stomach sleeper, so I’m not actually sure).
I wouldn’t say this is a cooling pillow, because any cooling that the pillow has would be made moot by a pillowcase. I have cooling pillowcases that help. But maybe if someone (I’m not sure why) slept without a pillowcase, they might see some cooling benefit.
Final Verdict
This pillow is NOT $100, it is only $59, which makes it much easier to try than some of the other memory foam pillows out there. I would tell you to try it if you are suffering from neck pain or headaches. Especially for this price. This pillow has been a lifesaver for me and I would buy it again in a heartbeat. My husband who is pillow indifferent has said he only wants to use this pillow from now on. And if I buy another one to try, that he opts out of all future pillow trying. That says a lot right there folks, he usually could care less what pillow he is using and he has fallen in love with this one. It is a keeper!
